Graduate Teaching Assistants
Graduate Teaching Assistants, Tutors and Laboratory Demonstrators
The Learning and Teaching Centre (previously Teaching and Learning Service) is responsible for half of this training (the GTA's own Department or Faculty is responsible for the other half).
The training provided by the Learning and Teaching Centre aims to:
- provide a brief introduction to teaching and learning at the University of Glasgow and the role GTAs play in the learning of the University's undergraduates
- develop among GTAs, an insight into how their students learn
- provide GTAs with an opportunity to develop effective ways to facilitate the learning of their students
- encourage GTAs to reflect upon their teaching practices
Information for students wishing to teach at the University of Glasgow
Statutory GTA training will be arranged for you by your Faculty. In some faculties this happens automatically; in others you must contact your Graduate School or the Coordinator of the course(s) you intend to teach yourself.
Sessions occur as soon as possible in the first semester (October to December). The session you attend will be tailored to suit the teaching role you will find yourself in whether you are working with tutorial groups or demonstrating in laboratory classes.
Further support materials are available on a Moodle site, available to University of Glasgow students at: http://services.moodle.gla.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=184
Information for staff
Senate requires that each faculty coordinates the organisation of the training its GTAs receives. The numbers of students requiring GTA training should be forwarded to the GTA statutory training coordinator Mary McCulloch as early as possible to allow for appropriate training sessions to be arranged.
Further Training for GTAs - the GTA Module
LTC offers a course which may interest you. The course is called the GTA Module: Approaches to Teaching, Learning and Assessment and is open to GTAs each year. Opting to study this module would be useful for anyone considering an academic career. The Module runs in the second semester and classes take place in the evening. Successful completion of the module allows you to apply for associate membership of the Higher Education Academy.
