Switch IT off!
Energy awareness for IT equipment
TIPS
Turn off and power down
Switch off all IT equipment when not in use (except when a PC has to be left on for operational reasons)
Ensure that all power down modes are enabled consulting your departmental IT adviser if necessary for advice. As well as clearly reducing the energy consumption, these steps will steps will reduce the heat produced lowering cooling costs. Equipment lifespan will also be extended. Switching modern computers on and off like this will not cause damage.
Install a 7 day timer
A 7 day timer installed on equipment such as printers will ensure that they're not left on overnight or at weekends and can save up to 70% on energy costs.

Older PC monitors
With older PCs, monitors can account for up to two-thirds of energy use in offices, so always turn them off when they are not in use. Consider upgrading to flatscreen monitors, which take up less desk-space and use up less energy and emit less heat for better comfort.
Laptops
Laptops also help to lower energy bills as they generally use much less energy than a standard PC.
Minimise cooling loads
Place heat-emitting equipment such as printers in a separate, naturally ventilated area with good airflow. This helps minimise air conditioning costs and excessive noise. Colder areas on the north side of buildings are ideal.
Purchase for your requirements
Choose equipment that caters for your current business needs. Do not over specify as energy and cooling requirements will be increased. Always take running costs into account as well as the initial purchase cost. Ensure all new equipment has energy savings features such as ' Energy Star' performance specifications.
