UNIVERSITY of GLASGOW

Equality and Diversity Unit

Race equality

The University is fully committed to promoting racial equality and providing a work, learning, research and teaching environment free from racism or racial tension. We recognise that education plays a vital role in equality and that we can play a pivotal role in ensuring Scotland is free of racial discrimination.

To support this aim the University has appointed a senior manager as the Race Equality Champion, currently Professor Andrew Nash (Clerk of Senate). Our Race Equality Champion promotes and raises awareness around race equality issues. He also acts as chair of the Race Equality Group, and feedback to the Equality and Diversity Strategy Committee to the Principal and other senior managers.

The University welcomed the opportunity to develop a Race Equality Scheme and Action Plan in line with legislation. Our plan covers staff, students and visitors to the University and we plan to annually report on progress.

Glasgow Anti Racist Alliance has recently published a report The State of the Nation: Race and Racism in Scotland 2008
