Postgraduate Events

19 and 22 December, Supiot reading group

There will be a first meeting of the group on Friday 19 December from 11-1, reading Part 1 of Homo Juridicus. The meeting will be held in G26.  The second meeting will be at 2.30 on Monday 22nd December 2008, and the third and final meeting of the group in January. Contact Professor Christodoulidis if you are interested in attending or if you need access to the material.

31 March - 2 April 2009, Smith in Glasgow 2009

A conference marking the 250th anniversary of the publication of Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments.  Plenary speakers include Dr Nicholas Phillipson (University of Edinburgh, Professor James Chandler (University of Chicago), Professor Tom Campbell (CAPPE & Charles Sturt University), Professor Amartya Sen (Harvard University).  There is a reduced registration fee for students.  To register see the website.

Abstracts are invited for The Public in Law, a postgraduate colloquium to be held at the Law School in April 2009.  The call for abstracts, information on speakers and the theme of the colloquium, can be found on the colloquium website

The deadline for abstracts is Monday 2 Feburary 2009.  To submit an abstract or to contact the organisers, email thepublicinlaw@yahoo.co.uk.

The following is a list of events taking place outwith the University that might be of interest to law postgraduate students.

4-9 January 2009 17th International Youth Leadership Conference, Prague

The theme of the conference is 'a cross-cultural exchange of ideas concerning the future of world leadership.'  The IYLC is an intensive 5-day programme that welcomes students from different countries to participate in an exchange of different perspectives on global issues.  Conference website.

28 February - 1 March 2009, Critical Lawyer's Group Conference 2009, Manchester

The Conference will take place at Manchester Metropolitan University School of Law.  The theme is 'Human Rights and the State.' For more information see the conference website.  If you are interested in attending, contact Professor Christodoulidis.  The Law School will cover travel costs.

2-4 July 2009, Association for Legal and Social Philosophy (ALSP) Conference, Edinburgh

The theme of the conference is 'Ethics for the 21st Century.'  It is being held at the University of Edinburgh.  The deadline for paper/panel proposals is 1 February 2009. Registration opens on 1 March 2009.  Conference website.

Recent Postgraduate Events

Participants break for lunch at the colloquium5-6 June 2008 University of Glasgow Doctoral Colloquium, with Universities of Antwerp and Edinburgh

Doctoral students from the universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Antwerp gave short presentations on questions and themes from their doctoral research in a two-day doctoral colloquium at the School of Law.  Subject areas presented by students included Legal Theory, EU Law, International Law/International Economic Law, Public Law and Human Rights.  The colloquium is part of an ongoing collaboration between the Universities of Glasgow and Antwerp.  The event will be held in Antwerp next year (2009).

28-29 May 2008 AHRC Doctoral Colloquium, Deadlines: Contemporary Issues in Legal and Political Theory

An AHRC colloquium for doctoral students was held at the University of Edinburgh.  It was organized by doctoral students at the universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling. The colloquium hosted eight doctoral presenters and commentators on a range of topics in legal and political theory.

A session with doctoral participants in Hamburg 21-23 June 2007 'Critical Legal Theory? Postgraduate Projects in the Making,' Altona Foundation for Philosophical Research, Hamburg

A workshop for postgraduate students was held at the Centre for Legal Theory at the Altona Foundation for Philosophical Research (Altonaer Stiftung für philosophische Grundlagenforschung).  Three postgraduate students from the University of Glasgow presented papers at the workshop: Hakeem Yusuf, Christopher McCorkindale and Fleur Ramsay.
