Law School Governance

The School of Law is situated in the Stair Building, at 8 The Square.  Most members of the academic staff have offices in the Stair Building and some teaching is conducted here.  It also houses administrative offices, the Law Workshop, student common rooms, and three computer rooms

School Structure

The Head of Department is Professor Tom Mullen.  He is responsible for the day-to-day running of the department.  However, he is assisted by a number of School committees and office holders.

The School meets in a formal departmental meeting twice per semester.  All members of the teaching and support staff are members of the School, and student representatives also attend meetings.  The School also meets as the LL.B. Board of Studies at least once per year.  In this capacity, it reports to Faculty of Law, Business and Social Science, and its membership is widened to include representation from all University departments which contribute to subjects offered as part of the LL.B. degree.  The Head of Department chairs both the School meeting and the LL.B. Board of Studies.

The School also has a number of staff/student committees.  The committees are composed of student representatives and convenors of relevant courses. They meet at least once per semester and their function is to review the work of the year, and to consider Annual Course Monitoring Reports in relation to each of the courses within their sphere of competence.

They also receive your coursework assignments.   The Undergraduate Office can also provide you with any lecture or tutorial handout you have not already obtained.  However, if you lose a handout you should first check whether it is available in Moodle and, if so, print out a copy from there.  To contact the Undergraduate office, telephone 0141 330 4182 or email ug-office@law.gla.ac.uk.

The Postgraduate Office (Room G/21). Ms Susan Holmes is the Postgraduate Administrative Secretary.  The Postgraduate Office also houses the the Quality Assurance and Enhancement Secretary, Ms Kirsty Davidson.

The Examinations Office (Room G/28). Miss Helen Vincent is responsible for administering the examinations system.  Mrs Morna Roberts is the International Secretary, providing support for student exchange programmes, and supports the Student Placements scheme.

The Medical Law Office (Room 3/35). Mrs Grace McGuire is responsible for supporting all activity in Medical Law.

The Office of the Head of Department (Room 2/32). Mrs Jenny Crawford is the Management Team Secretary.  Appointments to see the Head of Department should be made via Mrs Crawford. Ms Rona Cameron is the department's Finance Assistant.

The School Administrator, Mrs Lorna Brown (Room 2/12) has overall responsibility for administration within the School.

Faculty of Law, Business and Social Science

The School of Law is part of the Faculty of Law, Business and Social Sciences.  It is chaired by the Dean, a senior academic appointed by the University Court, currently Professor Noreen Burrows (of the School of Law).  The Faculty has regular meetings, at which students are represented, and operates a number of Standing Committees, such as the Faculty Appeals Committee.  It is a sub-committee of the Senate to which it reports regularly.

The Faculty has responsibility for the management and conduct of academic matters within its jurisdiction such as changes to regulations, prescription of new courses and programmes, application of regulations, admission requirements, student progress and appeals, implementation of University policy and procedures and preparation of reports on issues remitted by the Senate for consideration.

The University

University Court is the governing body of the university, with ultimate responsibility for the deployment of resources in the university, and for the strategic plans of the institution. Chaired by the Rector (who is elected by students), the majority of its members represent the interests of the local community, business, commerce and the University’s graduates.  It is supported by the Court Office, whose head is the head of the university administration.

Senate is the supreme academic authority of the university.  Chaired by the Principal, it is composed of the professoriat, the University Librarian, Vice-Principals and Deans together with elected members from non-professorial staff.  It is responsible for degree regulations, for quality assurance matters including the external examining system and the scrutiny of proposed new courses and programmes, for student appeals, complaints, discipline and assessment, and for the processes of academic review.  It delegates many of its functions to committees, such as the Senate Disciplinary Committee.  The general management of Senate Affairs is entrusted to the Clerk of Senate, a senior academic, who is also Vice-Principal for Teaching and Learning.  The activities of Senate are supported by the Senate Office.

The Registry is responsible for matriculation of students, collection of fees, scheduling of examinations, and graduation.
