War studies
The War studies cluster runs the Scottish Centre for War Studies, based in the Department of History. The Centre focuses on the study of warfare in the modern era, but draws on departmental expertise in the medieval and early modern periods. A Masters in War Studies and a regular seminar series are offered by the Centre, while members of staff from the Centre appear on the editorial board of the leading journal in the field, War in History. The Centre has sponsored a series of conferences designed to open up the traditional field of military history by engaging with broader themes. The Centre has links with external bodies, such as the Royal Norwegian Air Force Academy. Distinguished visiting academics hosted by the Centre in recent years include Dr. Sonke Neitzel (University of Mainz, 2001) and Dr. Jurgen Forster (Leverhulme Trust Visiting Professor, 2001-2).
