Social and gender history

The School of Historical Studies contains a large number of social historians, ranging in expertise from monasticism in late antiquity to modern labour movements. Many collaborate methodologically or thematically across wide chronological frameworks.  The cluster contains several areas of particular strength, including post-1800 British social history and women's and gender history.  Members of this cluster work with the University of Strathclyde to offer a joint MSc in Social History and an associated seminar series.  Gender historians in this cluster have been involved in collaborative publishing projects with Women's History Scotland.  A large number of funded postgraduates are found in this cluster, some of whom meet regularly in a gender history reading group.

Members of this cluster have formed the Centre for Gender History in collaboration with gender historians at the University of Strathclyde.  This Centre hosted the 2008 conference of the Women's History Network in Glasgow.
