Medieval Scotland, Ireland and the British Isles
This cluster is distinguished from the Medieval Europe cluster by its remarkable interdisciplinarity, based on a long-standing and fruitful collaboration with the Departments of Celtic and Archaeology. This encompasses joint undergraduate teaching, shared PhD supervision and research collaboration. The work of this cluster focuses on the 'new' British history in the middle ages, seeking to decentre British history and open up problems which are only seen when 'these islands' are viewed from the perspective of the periphery in Scotland and Ireland. The cluster sponsors a thriving seminar series, a fortnightly charter workshops for PhD students, and hosts an enthusiastic group of research postgraduates and postdoctoral fellows. This cluster links to the Centre for Scottish and Celtic Studies and its MLitt in Medieval Scottish Studies. Staff have pursued major grant-funded collaborative projects, including a new AHRC project, the Prosopography of Medieval Scotland.
