The Industrial Politics of Devolution: New Book by Jim Phillips.

In August 2008 Manchester University Press published The Industrial Politics of Devolution: Scotland in the 1960s and 1970s, by Jim Phillips, Senior Lecturer in Economic and Social History. Jim's book examines devolution, explaining this central phenomenon in Scottish and British political life since the 1960s in terms of economic developments and industrial struggles. Its emphasis on popular pressures 'from below', and business and trade union activism, distinguishes it from standard accounts of devolution that privilege high politics and personalities. It is based on unpublished government, business and trade union records unused by previous authors.

Centre for Business History in Scotland to host the 2010 European Business History Association conference

The Council of the European Business History Association (EBHA) has announced that it will hold its 2010 annual conference in the United Kingdom for the first time, and it will be hosted by the Centre for Business History in Scotland at the University of Glasgow. The EBHA, dedicated to fostering a network of researchers in business history in Europe, was founded in 1996 with considerable support from the Centre for Business History, and the largest single group of members is from the UK. It is fitting, therefore, that Glasgow should be the venue for its first annual meeting outside of continental Europe. The theme of the conference will be: Business beyond the firm

While it is not unusual for business people to move from firm to firm, they also routinely move into -or sometimes create - organisations located outside the business world, ones linked to politics, government, education, philanthropy and other pursuits. Movement in the opposite direction is also possible, while those involved exclusively in organisations beyond the firm are often characterised as "entrepreneurial" Increasingly over time, organisations beyond the firm seek to learn and to deploy business methods and practices, frequently hiring management consultants to advise them. As its main theme, this conference will explore the interrelationships between business practice, the firm and the entrepreneur on the one hand and the actors, organisations and institutions of the broader social and political environment on the other.  More details will follow.
