A centre for research

The Dumfries campus hosts several centres of research.

  • The Crichton Tourism Research Centre (CTRC)  has expertise in areas including tourism, globalisation and cultural change; ecotourism and nature based tourism; marketing cultural and nature-based tourism; branding and identity; and festivals and events. Our geographical areas of specific interest cover the countries and regions of Scotland, England, Orkney, the Caribbean, the Canary Islands and Spain.
  • The Crichton Centre for Research in Health & Social Issues conducts research on a wide range of applied health and social policy issues, from building healthier communities to investigating gender inequalities.
  • A unit dedicated to Robert Burns Appreciation & Research in Dumfries (BARD) is being established during 2008. This unit will collaborate with the Robert Burns Centre at our main campus in Glasgow, as well as with local Burns organisations and clubs in the South of Scotland.
  • The Dalswinton project, also currently being established, will investigate an important Dumfriesshire estate over a period of two millennia.
  • The Crichton Carbon Centre is an exciting new development in international efforts to tackle climate change, including global warming, energy efficiency and alternative energy sources.
  • The Andy Goldsworthy Digital Archive (the result of a collaborative research project) documents the works of landscape artist Andy Goldsworthy.  The archive is currently housed at the Dumfries Campus.
